Dr. Richard Zhao is currently a tenured Associate Professor of Pathology, Microbiology-Immunology and Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is also the Division Head of Molecular Pathology and Director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Zhao received his B.S. degree from Shandong College of Oceanography in China, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Oregon State University, USA. His postdoctoral training was at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, where he also served as a Research Assistant Professor for two years. Dr. Zhao served as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology-Immunology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Chicago Children's Medical Research Center from 1994-2003, where he was the Director of Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, Director of the DNA Sequencing and the co-Director of the Flow Cytometry Core Facilities. During his tenure at Northwestern University, he was named as the Bernard L. Mirkin PhD MD Research Scholar, an endowed Chair with one million dollar endowment to support his research. Dr. Zhao joined the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2004.
Besides his primary academic appointments at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Zhao holds numerous adjunct faculty appointments in various other universities including Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine; the Institute of Virology of the China CDC; the Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology of the Chinese Military Academy of Medical Sciences; Institute of Virology, Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences; Zhongshan University, and the University of Pécs, Pécs, Hungary.
Dr. Zhao also serves on various consulting boards and scientific review bodies. These include the Board of Governors and Chairman of the Scientific Impact Committee at the Kinsey Institute of Indiana University, Board of Directors of the StatsMED Institute, Baltimore, MD, and Advisors for the Gerson Lehrman Group and the Clinical Advisors Firm. Dr. Zhao has served on various international science review boards including the US National Institute of AIDS and Infectious Diseases, Illinois American Cancer Society, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), Israel Science Foundation, University of Sydney, Australia and the National Medical Research Council (NMRC), Singapore.
Specializing in HIV/AIDS and Molecular Diagnostics, Dr. Zhao’s general research interest is in the area of host-pathogen interactions specifically to study the effects of viral infections on host cellular activities such as cell cycle G2/M regulations, apoptosis and vial pathogenesis. Dr. Zhao has served on a number of scientific editorial boards including Retroviology, Cell Research, Clinical Laboratory Sciences (guest editor), Clinical and Applied Immunology Review, and Frontiers in BioSciences. He has published more than 80 scientific articles in various American and international journals with more than 60 conference abstracts and edited three scientific books and two special issues of scientific journals. Dr. Zhao has been invited to give numerous lectures on his basic science research and molecular diagnostics world-wide including the United States, China, France, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Mexico, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
